White Sox Minor Keys: June 10, 2018

It's the last week of the first half for most of minor league baseball

One thing that could be delaying deserved promotions between the White Sox’ A-ball affiliates? The chance at first-half championships.

This week marks the last one of the first half, and both Winston-Salem and Kannapolis are in position to clinch postseason appearances. The Dash hold a 1½-game lead over Buies Creek in the Carolina League Southern Division, and the Intimidators are up two games on Lakewood in the South Atlantic League Northern.

While Kannapolis has the larger lead, it also has the tougher road. Two doubleheaders scheduled over the course of three days make it easy to lose a lot of ground in the loss column.

Lehigh Valley 6, Charlotte 2

  • Carson Fulmer: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 1 WP, 63 of 97 pitches for strikes.

Tennessee 3, Birmingham 2

  • Danny Mendick wnt 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Zack Collins singled and struck out thrice, his third three-strikeout game over his last four.
  • Eloy Jimenez was 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.
  • Seby Zavala, 1-for-4 with a K.
  • Spencer Adams: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Ian Hamilton: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Winston-Salem 2, Carolina 1 (11 innings)

  • Joel Booker went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Luis Alexander Basabe went 0-for-3 with a sac bunt and two strikeouts.
  • Micker Adolfo was 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Alex Call was 0-for-4 with a K.
  • Ti’Quan Forbes wore the collar and silver sombrero.

Kannapolis 4, Rome 1

  • Luis Gonzalez went 1-for-4.
  • Luis Robert replaced him and singled in his only plate appearance.
  • Evan Skoug was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Luis Curbelo singled and struck out thrice.

Mississippi State advances.
Pilkington not done yet.

That Vanderbilt / Mississippi State Super Regional was crazy.

What’s the importance of a first-half championship?

Fung is winning and winning is fung (teams sometimes like their players to “learn to win” in the minors).

Also, first-half championship gives them a spot in the playoffs at the end of the season, so they get more organized games to play in (just a bit more development time).

Extra revenue for the affiliates, as well.

So, ultimately not anything you or I might be terribly interested in, but neither are they trivial concerns from the nuts-and-bolts/organizational side for the Sox and their affiliates.

Updated top 100 from FG post-draft:

Madrigal clocks in as the 4th highest ranked Sox prospect at #33. Zack Collins gets a bit of a jump from 91 up to 75 (though a lot of the upward movement at this time of year seems to come from graduations). Adolfo made his first appearance on their board at 86. Dunning went from an honorable mention preseason to #91. Burdi tumbled a bit (though it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with his rehab since they don’t show him as being on a downward trajectory). Hansen is the disappointment of the group, dropping from 72 down to 113 (presumably due to the injury and uncertainty that comes with it).

Fangraphs does some good stuff, but their prospect rankings lists don’t seem well-thought.

Hansen dropping is obviously from the injury (he hasn’t done anything to go either way).

I think the biggest disappointment is that Cease is somehow missing from the list altogether.

Jose Rodriguez now with the 2.9% K rate after going 1-4 with a double today.

I expect Luis Robert to start torching the Sally this week or next as the rust comes off.

“as the rust comes off.”
Maybe we can speed up the process by soaking him in Coca-Cola!

Oh what a metaphor for the downfall of Communist Cuba…

Or WD-40

Per James Fegan tweets, Alec Hansen slotted for a start this weekend for the Barons AND Micker Adolfo medically cleared to begin a throwing program.

Straight to BHam? Wow.

He also says Robert to W-S in 7-10 days.

Right Size Wrong Shape

The children of Winston Salem still have nightmares from his pitch face. I believe there was a law passed or something.
