White Sox Minor Keys: June 20, 2018

The regular season resumes for Birmingham, Winston-Salem and Kannapolis today, so we’ll have plenty of promotions to dissect.

In the meantime, Michael Kopech started for Charlotte tonight against Columbus, and the first inning looked like more of the same from him. He gave up a single, a walk, and then another walk after an error to fall behind 2-0 before recording the first out.

But when the smoke cleared, his emerged with the victory and a line that could’ve looked a lot worse: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, and a homer that, as a White Sox pitcher, he is legally required to surrender to Adam Rosales.

Our man in Charlotte Jonathan Lee said Kopech had problems with home plate umpire Chris Graham’s strike zone, but he managed to overcome the struggles to put together his best outing in June. After the game, he said that he felt like he had fun again.

Charlotte 6, Columbus 4

  • Leury Garcia played short and went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Avisail Garcia went 2-for-4 with a homer and a strikeout. He was originally supposed to play right field, but DH’d instead of running around a wet outfield.
  • Michael Kopech: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, 1 WP
  • Thyago Vieira: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Great Falls 6, Billings 3 (Game 1, 7 innings)

  • Amado Nunez, Lenyn Sosa and Miker Feliz all went 1-for-3.
  • Jason Bilous: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • Andrew Perez: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Great Falls 3, Billings 2 (Game 2, 7 innings)

  • Lenyn Sosa went 0-for-3.
  • Jhoandro Alfaro went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Romy Gonzalez was 0-for-2 with a walk.
  • Jonathan Stiever: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP

AZL Indians1 8, AZL White Sox 7 (10 innings)

  • Camilo Quinteiro went 3-for-4 with a double, sac bunt and strikeout.
  • Kelvin Maldonado and Lency Delgado both were 1-for-5 with two strikeouts.
  • Luis Mieses went 2-for-5 with a triple and a double.
  • Jose Guerrero was 1-for-5 with a double and two strikeouts.
  • Harvin Mendoza went 1-for-3 with a walk, and was caught stealing.
  • Cabera Weaver, 2-for-4 with a strikeout.

DSL White Sox 6, DSL Blue Jays 5

  • Jose Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
  • Jefferson Mendoza, 1-for-3 with a double, walk and strikeout.

Did you say Quinterio got the full $300K that the White Sox could offer, Jim? I thought you did and I was wondering what a 20 year-old (now 21) Dominican player had to do to get that type of bonus. I guess being good enough to reach base 89% of the time in your first two games is a good start.

jorgefabregas

Huh. That explains it. I’d read discussions about whether he was the same dude as this guy: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=quinte000cam

But his MILB page lists his birthplace as the Dominican. http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=678924#/career/R/hitting/2018/ALL

jorgefabregas

Thanks. I guess there’s no reason that he couldn’t have been born in the DR, but grown up in Cuba. Or maybe milb is wrong.

IllinoisJones

probably more likely is he’s Cuban but defected to the Dominican, where he then signed a contract?

jorgefabregas

Very possibly that as well, but milb.com lists a Dominican city as his birthplace. I’ve never heard of that happening with another Cuban defector.

Jonathan Stiever: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP
Good start. If we found a starter in the Fifth round, that would be great.

The White Sox are expected to sign Miguel Tejada Jr next month. Looks like his dad.

Get the B-12 shots ready!

lil jimmy

Give this kid B-52 shots and send him to the Love Shack

asinwreck

His dad was four years old when “Rock Lobster” was released as a single. I need my B-12 shots and some Geritol….

sgp2204

Hopefully we don’t trade him for a bad pitcher before he plays in our organization.

jorgefabregas

Big 15 year-old.

Right Size Wrong Shape

No one will throw more than $300k at him?

Sox Future 2b Nick Madrigal: 2-6, 2B, 2 Runs

Sox Future C Adley Rutschman: 3-5, 2 2b’s, HR, 2 Runs, 4RBI, 1K

Oregon State plays Mississippi State on Fri.

Let the promotions begin!

Birmingham now loaded with starting pitchers: Hansen, Dunning, Cease, Flores, Guerrero, Clarkin and eventually Puckett.

I think Clarkin is hurt so that makes 5 and they’ll have to figure something out when he and Puckett come back – if they come back. Deep though.

PopeDonnPall

Birmingham and Winston with prospects outfield wide:
Birmingham: Basabe, Booker, Call (and Polo)
Winston: Robert,Rutherford, Gonzalez and Adolfo with one rotating at DH I’m guessing once Adolfo can throw. DEEP!

sgp2204

That’s a pretty impressive grouping right here. And while the Garcia’s are rehabbing, we can have a Charlotte outfield of Eloy/Garcia/Garcia.

I think the worst outfield in the system right now is at the big league level hah

sgp2204

Dang. There goes that idea. Although I guess I should be happy the big league team might not be as horrible.

tommytwonines

Yeah! I still have hope.

Brett R. Bobysud

Fisher is still in Birmingham as well, I believe, so that’s another OF.

Right Size Wrong Shape

Does no Tate Blackman pretty much confirm Madrigal to Winston Salem?

sgp2204

I would have to imagine so. Thought we were finally going to get him in the system when I was watching last night’s game, but they continue to pull off the late rallies.

lil jimmy

Here’s a question. Where the hell is Steel Walker?

Right Size Wrong Shape

When is the deadline to sign?

asinwreck

I imagine his bonus is affected by how much the Sox give Madrigal.

tommytwonines

On a high-beam doing construction?

NDSox12

Looks like I finally have a reason to watch Charlotte on days when Kopech isn’t pitching.

asinwreck

I’m sad that Nick Basto’s ceiling with the organization was Birmingham. I would have liked for him to get to the Knights before being released, so he could be a Basto out of Carolina.

PopeDonnPall

Barnum survives another day. I feel like he represents the last cookie to crumble as far as flushing out the old never-will-be’s for the new and improved system. Right now unless Sheets picks up his game, Keon has a gig.

Trooper Galactus

Keon should have been sent packing too. Not like they can’t fill in first base without Sheets.

sgp2204

Luis Robert with an 0-2 single, stolen base, and run scored to start his first game in High-A. Very nice.
