Tigers 7, White Sox 5: Comeback again for naught

The followed-from-Section-109-during-the-Sox-Machine-Meetup bullet-point recap:

*For the second straight game, the White Sox offense came to its senses and roared back to tie the Tigers in the middle innings, only to find themselves unable to ever take the lead.

*This time, they rallied from a 5-0 deficit against Jordan Zimmemann with four in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Jose Abreu grounded out with the bases loaded in the seventh, and the Tigers regained the lead for good in the eighth.

*Jace Fry, who pitched a scoreless seventh, gave up a single to Victor Martinez to start the eighth. In came Bruce Rondon, who once again struggled against his former team. He walked John Hicks, then came up short in his stunning dive toward JaCoby Jones’ popped-up bunt to load the bases.

Rondon struck out Grayson Greiner for the first out, but Jose Iglesias’ chopper over the mound found the perfect gap in the drawn-in infield. I don’t think Yoan Moncada had a play at any base, but he made it look ugly by failing to look the ball into his glove before he moved to throw. Rondon made it uglier by walking in another run to give Detroit a 7-5 lead, which remained the score.

*The White Sox made a game of it. They were retired in order the first four innings, but Matt Davidson canceled the postgame show to start the fifth. Kevan Smith dropped a single into right, and Tim Anderson sliced a double into the right-field corner to score Davidson. Charlie Tilson made it four consecutive hits with a single that scored both Smith and Anderson. Tilson then swiped second, after which the bottom of the order made itself useful — Adam Engel moving Tilson to third with a groundout, and Trayce Thompson scoring him with a sac fly.

*Yolmer Sanchez started the sixth by tripling over Nick Castellanos and against the right-field wall for his eighth three-bagger of the season, and Abreu cashed him in with a sac fly to tie the game at 5.

*Unfortunately, Abreu couldn’t come through an inning later. The Sox had the bases loaded with two outs after an Engel one-out single and two-out walks to Moncada and Sanchez. But Abreu fell behind 0-2, and could only bounce weakly to third.

*In the end, the rally only got Lucas Giolito off the hook. Giolito struck out six over 5 1/3 innings, but he also gave up three-run homer to Castellanos in the third, and a two-run shot to him in the fifth. The first looked a little windswept, but Giolito walked Leonys Martin on four pitches with two outs and nobody on to start the mess. The second was a no-doubter.

*Smith was the only White Sox with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .433.

*The White Sox are now 1-7 against Detroit on the season.

*Thanks to everybody who came out, and sorry if I missed you on the way out.

I agree with pnoles’s assertion that he is thoroughly tired of losing to the Tigers.

Lurker Laura

No kidding. They’re this year’s version of the Royals.

MrTopaz

If only Davidson could hit against them the way he does against the Royals.

Trooper Galactus

If only Davidson could hit against ANYBODY the way he does against the Royals.

Good seeing everybody!  I may have #108ed a little too hard, but I bounced back and am 100% OK.
