Eloy Jimenez still cooking, while Michael Kopech struggles

Eloy Jimenez extended his hitting streak to 10 games in style Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a double and his sixth homer of the season.

Just as impressive as the homer, Jimenez has a six-game multi-hit streak. As he approaches his Birmingham game total from the year before, it seems like he doesn’t have much more to accomplish there:

  • 2017: .353/.397/.559, 5 BB, 16 K over 73 PA
  • 2018: .319/.347/.652, 4 BB, 12 K over 75 PA

Columbus 4, Charlotte 3

  • Charlie Tilson went 1-for-5.
  • Casey Gillaspie went 2-for-4 with his first homer and a strikeout.
  • Eddy Alvarez, 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Michael Kopech: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 HBP, 34 of 66 pitches for strikes.

Tennessee 6, Birmingham 2

  • Tito Polo went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and a stolen base.
  • Zack Collins walked twice and struck out twice, bringing his 10-game hitting streak to an end.
  • Eloy Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a homer, double and a walk.
  • Matt Rose was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Ian Clarkin: 5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
  • Ryan Burr: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 1 WP

Winston-Salem 5, Buies Creek 3

  • Joel Booker went 0-for-2 with two walks.
  • Luis Alexander Basabe walked thrice and struck out once. He was caught stealing once and picked off once.
  • Blake Rutherford was 1-for-4 with a triple and a strikeout.
  • Micker Adolfo was 0-for-3 with an HBP.
  • Gavin Sheets, 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Yermin Mercedes went 0-for-3 with an HBP and two strikeouts.
  • Yeyson Yrizarri went off with two doubles and two singles, although he failed a heat check by getting caught trying to steal home.
  • Dylan Cease: 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 59 of 87 pitches for strikes.

Kannapolis 4, Hagerstown 3

  • Michael Hickman went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and an HBP.
  • Carlos Perez, 1-for-4.

What does it take for Jimenez to be promoted to Charlotte? Seems there should be a space open with Palka up and Cordell out.

Right Size Wrong Shape

I wonder if they’re waiting for Robert to come back to have the dominoes start falling.

Soon, I suppose. Although there is nothing stopping them from promoting Jimenez directly to the majors.

He’s only had ~150 PAs there.

35Shields

Both his stat line and scouting reports say he doesn’t have much to work on at the plate in Birmingham.

I’d say 150+ PAs is enough to check the “gotten enough reps at this level” box, given that there doesn’t seem to be much else keeping him out of AAA.

The Southern League and Carolina League All-Star Games are both June 19th, which is also roughly around the time Robert is expected back. So that’s my guess for Jimenez and Basabe promotions.

Thoughts on Kopech outing? Short and ugly. What happened out there?

I think at this point most of Kopech’s remaining development is between his ears.
