White Sox Minor Keys: April 20, 2018

Michael Kopech once again posted gaudy peripherals in his third start of the season. He struck out 10 Indianapolis Indians while walking just one over five innings.

That said, he was touched up for single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, all scored by Kevan Newman, who reached base to lead off.

First inning: Walked, stole second with one out, then scored on a two-out single.

Third inning: Doubled, then scored on a follow-up single.

Fifth inning: Singled, moved to second on a bunt, took third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.

That last sequence may be why James Fegan said Kopech was “as self-critical as I’ve heard a pitcher be after striking out 10 guys.” We’ll have to wait until Fegan’s recap to see if he also said:

Indianapolis 4, Charlotte 1

  • Charlie Tilson went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.
  • Jose Rondon left the game hobbling after going 1-for-2. He was also picked off/caught stealing.
  • Daniel Palka was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Kevan Smith, 1-for-4 with a double and a K.
  • Casey Gillaspie went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.

  • Jace Fry made his 2018 debut: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

*Fry replaced Robbie Ross, who went on the disabled list after a start that brought the wrong Bard (Daniel) to mind: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 11 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, and a 30.38 ERA.

Jackson 7, Birmingham 2

  • Tito Polo went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base.
  • Zack Collins was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Eloy Jimenez went 0-for-4.
  • Seby Zavala had both the Barons’ singles, and he struck out twice.

  • Ryan Burr: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

*It doesn’t sound like Alec Hansen is close to returning. Rick Hahn said the Sox aren’t worried about his recovery from his forearm issue, but …

Salem 10, Winston-Salem 3

  • Joel Booker singled thrice, struck out once, got plunked once and swiped a bag.
  • Luis Alexander Basabe went 1-for-3 with a triple, two walks and a strikeout.

Damn, all these injuries to key prospects is getting disheartening. Good thing the second tier guys like Basabe, Adolfo, and Rutherford are off to such hot starts to ease some of the pain.

Brett R. Bobysud

Through 15 games, the Barons only have 3 guys with a batting average over .250:

Zavala – .333
Michalczewski – .308
Brett – .304

In addition, only one other guy has an OPS over .700, and that’s Fisher at .727.

I know Regions Field is tough on hitters, but yeesh.

Yeah… they’ve only played 5 home games so far, so I don’t think Regions Field has too much to do with it.

Trooper Galactus

Given how he’s scuffled the last few years, I’m more than happy with what Trey is doing so far.

Bad night in Soxville.

Jim when you type an “s” on your keyboard does the text automatically populate with the suggestion “struck out thrice”?

Would save a little time.

The Hansen update is a bit of non-chalant scariness.

White Sox have assigned RHP Ricardo Pinto to Triple-A Charlotte. He made three starts in High-A Winston Salem as they worked to stretch him out. He was acquired from the Phillies for international bonus pool space just before the season started.

Pinto threw 10.2 whacked-around innings for the Dash.  Good to go.
