Sporcle Saturday: Non-roster invitees
Spring Training is now underway with all positions officially reporting this past Monday, and the first game in the books. As Jim outlined last month, 22 non-roster invitees will be in attendance, hoping to make a strong impression, whether for the Sox or perhaps another team. Who will make it, if any? In past years, the Sox have had as many as seven NRIs play for the major league club, and as few as two.
Today’s Sporcle is quite the challenge, and I’ll take a moment to thank Jim for the theme idea. Your task? Name all NRIs to have played for the White Sox since 2007. That’s a total of 59 names. Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- As usual, first and last names are accepted, in addition to just last names.
- Because of the high degree of difficulty for this quiz, I’ve allotted the full 20 minutes to attempt completion.
- As hints, I’ve provided the season and the primary position of the player in question.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confound, and/or confuse your friends:
- 56% of the players on this list are pitchers.
- Of the position players on this list, 50% are catchers.
- Or, taken another way, nearly 80% (79.6) of all players on this list are pitchers and catchers.
- One player on this list appears three separate times (hint: an old SSS meme)

24/59. Not sure if that is good or bad.
Dammit boomer got 27
Shame.
30/59 . . .A real brain teaser there. I got lucky on some. Total blanks on 2012 and 2008. Oddly enough, I got all but one from 2007
This was very hard. 35/59, and I only did that well because of several memes on SSS the past few years.
0/59. Do I win something?
You still get the participation trophy. Congrats.
Tough one. Was basically just guessing and typing in names after the first couple of obvious ones. Learned a lot once the answers popped up. A whole bunch of guys I don’t remember at all.
Wow. I only got one right, I gave up to see I knew everyone from the past two years.
I got 38. ย Feel like I had room to improve there (missed 3 from 2016 and a few guys that played for the Sox just this past season).
This was great, Ted.
21. That was tough. I spent about 4 minutes trying to remember
Got everybody in 2016, but blanked on most of the other years. The second 2008 catcher I’ve never even heard of.
2007 catcher, rather.
