2018 MLB Draft: Day 2 Draftchat
Day 2 of the MLB Draft begins at noon CT, and the third through 10th rounds will be streamed on MLB.com, with a draft tracker available for those who can’t watch live.
The list of best available players is heavy on high school prospects, which runs counter to the White Sox’ tendency toward collegiate players.
Day 1 coverage
- White Sox select Nick Madrigal in first round
- White Sox select Steele Walker in second round
- The big questions about the White Sox’ Day 1 strategy

Using the Draft Rankings Database, here is a link to the best 50 remaining prospects: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lHOtwiN_GKzIG3yeF-8nr1LdAusd1Y8bIFNTg0Hdz4k/edit?usp=sharing
I kinda like Tristan Beck, guy was a potential top 5 pick not that long ago, good size and good enough velocity with a chance for more when he fills out.
My guess is the Sox go College pitcher. Even with the long ball issues, my hope would be Blaine Knight.
The problem with drafting the highest rated high school prospects in these later rounds is that most of them are committing to colleges now that the large bonus dollars are gone.
These next two picks can make or break this draft. Please, no more college outfielders.
So Tristan Pompey, then?
Pilkington
If the Sox think they see a mechanical flaw that caused the drop in velo this year, I like the pick
Very, very nice Konnor Pilkington LHP
College.
2080baseball on Pilkington:
#60 MLB / #56 Fan graphs. Nice value.
Like this pick. Was thinking a college arm would be good here. Let the Karl Pilkington jokes commence.
Gotta love a lefty!
Beat me to it.
I think it could be helpful if Pilkington learned a cutter. Help bust RH hitters inside.
Pilkington was looking really good in March and April, but hit a wall in May and has been hit hard the past couple of weeks. He’s a project but with upside.
A High Schooler!!! And a SS!!!
Kiley and Longenhagen have him listed as a 3B (and 20 lbs heavier than MLB Pipeline does). They also list him as a minus athlete.
So he’s relatable.
Endorsement opportunities abound in Chicago…
In the video MLB.com played, he looked like a big guy, but not in an unfit or unathletic way.
that was my thought, too. he looks fine to me.
maybe the lens was something like, “shortstop? no way he’s athletic enough for that… and for emphasis we’re putting him as a 3B.”
Perfect Game has some nice tape
This years Luis Curbelo . Same Same
Thanks for the scouting report, EB
Delgado, Lency Doral Academy (FL) SS
Who abducted Hostetler? A prep infielder in the fourth round! Last year’s Perfect Game report on Delgado:
Link not loading for me for some reason, but that’s encouraging for him to at least stay at a non-1B spot on the infield.
Baseball America’s take
Josh do you believe it is safe to assume De Sedas wanted to much money?
That’s my assumption. I think it’s best for him to go to Florida State and demonstrate he can hit advanced pitching.
And maybe stop hitting from the left side
blah. i wanted gingery.
Understandable, but at least I’ll be around to help keep things gingery.
i appreciate you. no matter what the torch-wielding mob chants about your kind.
Stiever, Jonathan Indiana U RHS R/R
Who loves Indiana?
#88 on the mlb.com list. Nice.
Oklahoma, Louisville, Indiana. Something about red jerseys.
My prediction that Hostetler would draft every available Louisville player is not looking good.
Write up on Zack Hess from LSU makes him look like a guy Sox and Hostetler might be interested in. Both started games and closed at LSU, wiry 6’6” 200lb. MLB.com write up Says he can run FB into high 90s and has a good to wipeout slider depending on how he’s stretched out. After having success stretching out good college relievers (Battenfield, Henzman) he seems like he might be a guy to try that with. Maybe be able to become a poor mans Chris Sale? I really like that they have tried stretching some of these guys out as a way of finding starters with higher ceilings in later rounds. If the Sox knew he was ticketed for relief, when is too early to use a pick on a reliever only type?
For the Sox, it’s fine after the 25th pick of the first round. (or the 7th pick if you really want to be mean)
Hahaha ouch. I always forget he was a first rounder because of Collins. I haven’t followed really any drafts before 2017, how was the Burdi pick received at the time? And is it common for one or multiple relievers to go in the first three rounds?
Most teams have abandoned using high picks on College relievers because schools abuse them. Too many outings and too many innings per week led to lots of injuries after draft day.
Ok that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for answering!
I thought Henzman was relieving again.
I thought he was still starting up until he got hurt but didn’t he just have knee surgery that ended his season?
McClure is the one with the knee surgery, unless you know of yet another horrific Sox prospect malady.
Ah no I had them mixed up. Thanks for the correction
oopsie. got Henzman and Hickman cornfused.
More like a poor mans Alec Hansen
Hansen is a giant. Handedness aside he reminded more of sale with the low 3/4 slot and pitch arsenal
Zack Hess is a pretty large human being.
So Hess has interesting facial expressions during his delivery?
They might be interested, but he is only a SO. We woun’t have enough money to pry him away from school at this point.
Heuer, Codi Wichita State (KS) RHP R/R
6′ 5″ Here’s a relief pitcher.
By trade or by projection?
just an educated guess.
Danke.
I have feelings about these players I’ve never heard of, and I want to tell them to you all!
That’s what we’re here for.
I like Lency based solely on having a unique name and think he’ll be great. That is all.
I lied, Konnor spells his name with a K so you know he’s going to strike everyone out.
Both excellent predictions.
that is sweet but I have to see a couple of minor league before I start throwing my rainbow colored rose petals
Weaver, Cabera South Gwinnett HS (GA) OF R/R HS SR
70 runner.
A second high school player
Eyyyyy. I think that’s the first time Hosteler has had two high school players in one set of top ten rounds. They said he ran a 6.3, which, IIRC, makes him about as fast as Luis Robert.
Listed at 150 lbs. I take it not much power.
A lot of dinner table will power.
Cabrera Weaver, fast, skinny prep CF in round 7.
Weaver’s one of those guys who can really fly, right?
6.26/ 60
Callis on MLB.com said he was a 70 runner, yes. A bit different than the Collins/Burger/Sheets picks.
UIC’s Charlie Cerny just went to Oakland. The Charlie Finley Chicago-Oakland connection endures.
That is a couple picks. Good for UIC
Moncada 430 ft bomb, for those of you not wanting to click away from riveting draft coverage.
That reminded me to click on the game… thanks
Reasonable first reaction to the Madrigal selection.
The Nationals will see if they can unlock Chandler Day’s potential. Took him in the 7th round.
Perez, Andrew South Florida (FL) LHP L/L
Thought this would be a Senior sign
Sounds like an Aaron Bummer profile – hard throwing lefty reliever.
wonder if we’d try again on montes de oca. the blurb hints at maybe some makeup stuff (although i might be reading that in). sounds like a closer profile.
and montes is….. gone
gunnar troutwine, same difference.
500 lbs between them. ( that’s 3 Nick Madrigals, plus change)
Troutwine, Gunnar Wichita State (KS) C R/R
Senior signing.
Someone has to catch all that pitching
Around the same time they took Evan Skoug last year, though less of a prospect (with a better name).
dat name
Bryce Montes de Oca makes it to the 9th round in his third time in the draft process. Wonder if the Mets will sign him?
Sousa, Bennett Virginia (VA) LHP L/L 4YR SR
Senior per Due!
23 years old. So, after ten rounds, the Sox have three LHPs, two RHPs, a catcher, two infielders, and two outfielders, with no obvious 1B/DH types.
Cleveland took a pitcher with Chad Bradford’s delivery and the appropos name Robert Broom.
picks 1-5 didn’t seem to bad….6-10 was rather unimpressive though
I was hoping they viewed Austin Becker signable and could fit him into their picks. Seemed like an interesting choice.
I base this solely on looking at out last couple drafts and reading expert takes on the current one but I give rounds 2-10 an “Eh.”But I also don’t care because I’m still so pleased we got Madrigal. This lineup needs a guy like that. Hard to strike out, fast, gets the barrel on it, great instincts and leadership. Great hands and D in the infield. Tim hits homers, Yoan hits homers, Jose hits homers, hopefully one of our three future outfielders will hit homers. I’m okay with Madrigal not needing to hit 15 homers.
Host does like his superlatives. Collins was the #1 pick all along… Madrigal was their number 1 pick all along… Burger was the their guy all along… Fulmer we except to be a bust…
Just seeing if you were still reading.
