The quote of 2009, and it wasn't from Ozzie
Working on the book tonight, I completed eulogies for Wilson Betemit, Bartolo Colon, Corky Miller and Jerry Owens.ย In the process, I was delighted to rediscover this quote, which, in my mind, is the greatest thing said this year by anybody in the White Sox organization:
For whatever reason, the Lord didn’t think I was ready to play in the big leagues last year and he kept me in Triple-A. — Jerry Owens
If you think you can top it, bring it.ย Because I don’t think it’s possible.
And speaking of the eulogized, Wilson Betemit was officially granted free agency.ย Good thing 2010 is setting up to be the Summer of Marquez.
So far, there are 11 official eulogies on the list, with four in the probable queue.ย There were 18 last year.

Christian Marrero Reading Room:
*Rudy Jaramillo is a free agent after rejecting the one-year contract offered by the Texas Rangers. I wonder if the Sox coaches ever officially signed those extensions…
*The Cheat revisits his Gavin Floyd projection.
*Clippings from the 1917 World Series (h/t SSS).
*J.J. reviews Octavio Dotel.
*Tim McCarver sings some great American standards. It isn’t bad enough.

Arizona Fall League:
- Surprise 6, Peoria 4
- Jordan Danks went 0-for-3 with an RBI and a HBP.
- C.J. Retherford tripled.
- Justin Cassel started and allowed three runs in three innings on four hits and a walk. He struck out four.
- Matt Long gave up two runs on three hits over two innings. No walks, one K.
And 0-for-3 officially qualifies as a “slow start” these days.
Per:Rudy Jaramillo is a free agent after rejecting the one-year contract offered by the Texas Rangers. I wonder if the Sox coaches ever officially signed those extensionsโฆ
I read on MLBTR that Jaramillo had been represented by Scott Boras in the past… I didn’t really see the Sox going for him before I heard about this, now the likelyhood has gone from slim to none.
Tim McCarver has a pleasant voice and “There Used To Be A Ballpark Right Here” is a great baseball song. I was very surprised at his ability much better than mine.
Yeah, it wasn’t bad. Wasn’t good by singer standards, though, so I wonder why anybody would buy it.
I cant imagine thats the quote of the year, its more sad then it is hilarious to me.
Ozzie had to of said something better…. I just cant think of anything.
It’s genuine, though. Ozzie says a lot of stuff just to say it — Owens is speaking from the heart. It’s touching.
I forget the exact quotes but I found it pretty comical when two of our superstars, Fields and Anderson, wanted answers and demanded trades.
The only song I want to hear Tim McCarver sing is his farewell song to baseball broadcasting.
Where are the 2005 eulogies? Can’t find them since the site was changed.
They’re not up… yet. I haven’t been able to commit the time to propping the old database up to get everything I need off it.
Does anyone else think it’s weird that Jerry Owens refers to Kenny Williams as The Lord? ๐
Good one.
I was lucky enough (or extremely unlucky, depending on your perspective) to hear an interview with Owens on the score during Spring Training…. I’ll just say that it was 6 am and Jerry Owens loves him a heaping helping of Jesus-Flakes (TM) to get his day started out.
Jesus hath forsaken Jerry’s Isolated Power.
