White Sox Minor Keys: June 28, 2022

José Rodríguez (Jim Margalus / Sox Machine)

When Lenyn Sosa returns to the White Sox farm system, he’ll be making his debut in Triple-A since the White Sox optioned him to Charlotte.

The Birmingham Barons have adjusted quite well to life without him, as Sleepy Harold mentioned in the summary of last week’s action on the farm. They’ve won five out of six and seven of nine after beating Chattanooga 12-9 in 10 innings, which is all the more impressive considering the Barons trailed the Lookouts 9-2 entering the eighth inning.

José Rodríguez did the driving, going 4-for-4 with a double and scoring three runs from the second spot. He raised his line in June to .309/.340/.361. That’s only good for a .701 OPS, which isn’t yet quite the pop you’d expect from a Popeye, but it’s a 90-point improvement on what he’d done over April and May.

Durham 6, Charlotte 2

  • Eloy Jiménez went 0-for-4.
  • Carlos Pérez went 2-for-3 with an HBP.
  • Yolbert Sánchez was 1-for-4 with a double.

Birmingham 12, Chattanooga 9 (10 innings)

  • José Rodríguez went 4-for-4 with a double and a sac bunt. A pickoff kept it from being perfect.

Aberdeen 7, Winston-Salem 2

  • Colson Montgomery went 1-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Oscar Colás was 2-for-5 with a strikeout.
  • Luis Mieses, 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Adam Hackenberg was 1-for-4.

Kannapolis 5, Down East 1

  • Wes Kath went 2-for-5 wtih a homer and two strikeouts.
  • DJ Gladney was 1-for-4.
  • Wilfred Veras went 2-for-4 with a homer, strikeout and stolen base.
  • James Beard was 0-for-2 with a walk and an HBP, but was caught stealing.
  • Brooks Gosswein: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

ACL White Sox 7, ACL Brewers Gold 4

  • Cam Butler went 2-for-5 with two strikeouts.
  • Luis Pineda, 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • Dario Borrero went 1-for-4.
  • Victor Quezada homered, walked and struck out twice.
  • Yohemy Nolasco: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
  • Emerson Talavera: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

DSL Brewers1 4, DSL White Sox 2

  • Guillermo Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • So did Erick Hernandez.
  • Ryan Burrowes singled, struck out and was plunked twice.
  • Leandro Alsinois went 2-for-4 with a strikeout.

Yeesh….does Eloy understand he’s in Charlotte for a rehab assignment and that he should be killing the ball by now? Hitting .190 with a .417 OPS is not what you look for from a guy who’s supposed to help save your season

upnorthsox

a guy who’s supposed to help save your season”

Screw that, how about for a guy who is getting paid $7.5 mil this year and wants to be paid $10.5 mil next year. Hard to believe but that contract sure isn’t looking to good these days.

itaita

Id still rather have that then Leury for 2 more years.

Not to be too negative here but I don’t think Eloy is going to be the same hitter he was before the torn pec. Injuries like that have been know to sap a players power. Eloy with sapped power and a gb% of 50+ is not a good hitter.

jorgefabregas

Unless the injury is making him pound the ball into the ground, I’m not sure the data backs this up. His average exit velocity this year is the highest of his career, basically tied with 2020.

texag10

Well the good(?) news is his batted ball profile in Charlotte is almost spot on to his 2019 season, although he’s not hit a homer yet and has an extraordinary amount of infield flies.

He’s been such a mess since he came back last year, and I’m sure not having access to the Sox staff in the offseason because of the lock out didn’t help.

I feel like this rehab assignment is more about rehabbing his hitting mechanics than his injury.

Eloy is clearly not fully healthy. He has been DH’ing mostly. An indicative his legs aren’t there yet. You can’t hit for power without your legs and hips in good health. I’m a bit worried we won’t be seeing Eloy any time soon.

Me too. I’m not seeing the organizational benefit of having him DH in Charlotte in June if he isn’t ready to do so. The important thing is whether he can contribute to the big league club in August & September and I’m not convinced that this is getting us closer to seeing a healthy and effective Eloy on the major league active roster.

An exclusively DH Eloy has very little use with the White Sox already rostering Abreu, Vaughn, Sheets, and Burger. We need an Eloy with legs, which is already a bad outfielder, but without legs, then he is pretty much useless. Hahn should explore trading him sooner than later.

If he’s DH-only who also can’t hit, I don’t think he really has much trade value at all, esp on a long-term deal. There’s nothing to do but wait and hope he gets healthy and mechanically fixed.

soxygen

I’m with a-t here.

There are a lot of other guys the Sox could move who haven’t fallen way short of expectations this year – Pollock, Burger, Sheets, Engel, Harrison… Some of them may even bring back a little bit of value in a trade!

If he makes it back to the majors this year, but struggles, how much less offensive production will he provide than Sheets or Harrison? Hard to imagine it would be much worse than either of those guys, and given the upside with Eloy…I think you’d just wait it out and hope he comes back healthy next year.

Montgomery’s on base streak is still alive, no? Or are we not supposed to talk about it?

Eloy doesn’t deserve a call up. This is why it is dumb to pay guys before they perform.

Would you have paid him after he finished 4th in the ROY voting with a 116 OPS+, or perhaps after he won the Silver Slugger his next season?
