Something nice: Ross Gload has done probably as well as he can while getting the fewest at-bats out of anybody on the team. Since June 1, he's batting .361 (13-for-36).
Must improve: Physical abilities. For instance, it would help if he learned how to hit right-handed, increased his speed and outfield instincts, because the Sox could use one of those guys. As it stands now, Gload is fairly redundant on the roster.
Highlights
June 21Gload goes 1-for-1 coming off the bench during a blowout. What makes this important is that it extends his hitting streak to six, and that he reached base on his last six plate appearances.
July 1 Down to his last strike with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Gload singles off the leg of Ryan Dempster. Two batters later, A.J. Pierzynski goes deep, and the Sox win.
Lowlights
April 8Gload flies out on the first pitch he sees on his second at-bat on the season. In his first at-bat, he grounded into a double play on the second pitch. At this point, Gload had made three outs on three pitches.
July 9Gload enters as a pinch-runner for Paul Konerko, but fails to score the tying run on a flyball to right because he fails to tag. That kind of pinch-running doesn't help much. If A.J. Pierzynski doesn't barrel into Alex Gonzalez during the next play, Gload is the goat.
Grades
Bat: C+
He's doing what he can, but his bat is fairly replaceable. He's also the only White Sox who has yet to hit a homer this season. Even Pablo Ozuna has one.
Running: CHe hasn't been on base much, which might explain why he failed to tag on that potential sacrifice fly July 9.
Fielding: CHe hasn't done anything impressive one way or the other.
