Nick Magic fun fact

I was working on a Nick Masset retrospective earlier today, and I wanted to see how bad his WHIPs compared to the rest of relievers who worked as much as Masset in the American League.

A little background first: Way back when David Aardsma was traded, I questioned why the Sox sent him packing while keeping Masset around.  I wasn't upset about it, but it confused me a little, considering Aardsma's higher ceiling and periods of dominance.

Knowing that, I was amused when I searched on Play Index for the highest WHIPs for relievers who worked at least 39 innings in 2007, and 44 innings, and here's what it looks like:

2007:
  1. Shawn Camp: 2.025
  2. Nick Masset: 1.983
  3. Mike MacDougal: 1.961
2008:
  1. Mark Lowe: 1.759
  2. David Aardsma: 1.726
  3. Nick Masset: 1.701
I'm glad I didn't get too worked up about it.

I know he played for the '07 Rays, who had the worst bullpen in baseball that year, but the fact that Shawn Camp somehow managed to throw at least 39 innings with a WHIP of over 2.00 would make even the Billy Koches and Antonio Osunas of the world think about making a comeback.

Make fun of Camp all you want, but then look at his performance against the Sox June 25 that year:

2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
