White Sox to sign Viciedo (updated)

So sayeth Phil Rogers:

According to major-league sources, the Sox have reached an agreement with 19-year-old third baseman Dayan Viciedo, who was declared a free agent a week ago.

Viciedo reportedly will receive a major-league contract worth about $11 million. That’s more than twice the size of the deal that brought Alexei Ramirez to the White Sox last season, and Ramirez was second in American League Rookie of the Year voting last season.

It's hard to see how this is a bad deal if the Sox have control over him for six seasons with full arbitration rights.  He's not going to be blocking anybody if he starts the year in Triple-A at either corner infield position.  The Sox don't have any power-hitting prospects outside of Brandon Allen, and even he's pretty sketchy considering last year was his first quality season in pro ball.

And if Josh Fields happens to be somebody worth holding onto, the Sox will have an opening at first when Jim Thome's contract expires for either Fields or Viciedo.  Fields could also go back to a corner outfield spot if Jermaine Dye is no longer around.  There are options to be had, and he provides nice insurance if Fields doesn't rebound.

There's also the possibility that Fields is traded before the offseason is over, and considering how swiftly Nick Swisher was sent packing, I suppose we shouldn't count out another guy traded at the nadir of his career.

Here's the Baseball America scouting report from a couple weeks ago, if your memory needs to be refreshed.  Also, the Cheat has a good breakdown of the actual contractual possibilities.

************************

So Viciedo will join the 40-man roster, which the Sox added four other names to today:
Santeliz is the only real headscratcher.  His numbers don't indicate anything phenomenal, whether it's control, ability to strike guys out, get grounders or keep the ball in the park.  All of it spells mediocrity, and he just was converted into a reliever toward the end of last season.

I first thought I heard a lot of good things about Santeliz, but then I realized all of them came from Baseball America, which meant they all came from Rogers.  He said in the recent chat:

But the guy I think we could get there fairly quick if he turns it around is Clevelan Santeliz, who definitely has big-league stuff. He's pitching in Venezuela for the second year in a row, which is a good sign, and has hinted that he could come fast, either as a starter or, more likely, a reliever.

It's not like I have sources better than Rogers' or anything, but it wouldn't be the first time he grew too attached to an utterly unremarkable pitcher (see Phillips, Heath).

The 40-man roster now stands at 37, and Viciedo will make it 38.

They've had convenient timing on breaking news lately.

I wonder if he's 19 in Contreras or Che years

Sounds like 19, but his pants size is at least twice that.

3 things scouts and representatives seem to agree on

1. He is 19
2. He has a ton of power
3. He has a really good arm

After that everything esle is up in the air, his agent says he has a great work ethic, can play tons of positions, and is ready to hit now, scouts think he has bad hands, a poor work ethic, has gained to much weight and is a 1b/dh

The top 3 are already promising, lets hope the truth about the rest of his intangables falls somewhere inbetween what his agents and rival scouts are saying.

This is an exciting signing either way, and he is likely the first guy I am going to go watch come spring training.

I too am excited about this one. 11 mill seems very reasonable to me.

Addition to the point Rogers makes about Viciedo having good company in Contreras and Ramirez:

Contreras is renowned for his offseason workout program, and Ramirez is nearly invisible when he stands sideways. If they're going to stick together, there probably aren't two better guys he could have to help him not be fat.

On an unrelated note, Mike Downey's leaving the Trib.

Nice work, Jim.

Did some more research on Viciedo myself - I'm starting to get worried. The kid uses his girth to drive the ball, but there seems to be no indication that the girth still enables him to field.

Fat = Power, not finesse. It's the same way that CC Sabathia and Bobby Jenks can throw heat, but it doesn't really lend itself to fielding or control.

Pretty much, though there are some heavy guys who can run and field. Tony Gwynn and Casey Rogowski come to mind. (And I am thinking of '90s Gwynn, not '80s.)

I don't remember Sabathia having fielding problems......or needing to field much when you throw that hard.

Funny stuff on the ChiSox team page discussions about the signing. A couple of comments suggest he could be playing second.........which I would find very amusing indeed.

It seems to me the Cheat implicitly raises a really interesting question that I'd love to read about - what happened to budget concerns and do they still exist? Seems as if the days of heavy spending (Ron LeFlore, Tim Raines, Carlton Fisk) to no spending, have evolved into a fair amount of it. But Kenny has not given his annual "we've got a budget and we'll stick to it," speech. Curious, or am I missing something from lack of sleep? Fundbaby didn't like the Swisher trade much apparently as he kept us up all night last night.

Don't be surprised to see Viciedo on the major league roster come April. Kenny recently stated that it was never in his plans to send Alexei to the minors last year. Alexei was in a new country and Kenny wanted him to be comfortable around people he knew (Contreras). I wonder if the same logic will hold true when deciding what to do with Viciedo.

I don't recall seeing Williams giving a number. But I'd guess he has some money to work with, with Crede, Cabrera and Swisher's salary off the books. They did have to pay $5 million to get out of Tucson, so that's part of the money, but they also raised ticket prices once again.

It's hard to envision a scenario with both Fields and Viciedo on the same roster, barring an injury to Konerko or something. I think Betemit either seals a start in the minors for Viciedo, or a trade of Fields, although I could be wrong.

Very good point by Pete S!! If Kenny really had no plans to send down Ramirez @ 26 would he do it to Viciedo @ 19???? I also agree that it's hard to see him on the 25 man roster with Fields unless there is a major shake up coming. Fun stuff to ponder. Does anyone think that the Sox will make a run on Brian Roberts if he becomes available?? Will Kenny stay with the same pitching staff he has now??

I wonder if Kenny would've said that about Alexei had he hit .165 in the spring instead of .365.

Viciedo's going to turn 20 in the middle of spring training next year. Alexei was 26, and pretty much as polished as he was going to get. They're not going to have the same rules.
