Swisher sticking in leadoff spot

Ozzie Guillen is keeping Nick Swisher in the leadoff spot, which is a big sign in his growth as a manager.  He did remember what he said earlier during spring training, because he basically said it again:

"You have a leadoff hitter who can run, that's a plus," Guillen said. "But to be a leadoff hitter, you've got to get on base. You can't steal first.

"I'd rather be a guy who gets on base. [Swisher is] hitting [.261] and all of a sudden he gets on base six times in a row by walks, and we need people on base when you have [ Orlando] Cabrera and [ Jim] Thome behind you. You get on base, you're going to score a lot of runs."

This has further repercussions, because it lessens Jerry Owens' importance in the lineup.  Hopefully Swisher can keep playing a major-league-adequate center field, which will keep Carlos Quentin in left.  Right now, the at-bats those two are taking are leading to further good at-bats down the line.

If you need proof, look at Jim Thome's walk against Matt Guerrier in the seventh inning of Monday's game.  Guerrier had walked only two Sox in his previous 39+ innings against them -- Thome's made it three, and five batters later, Joe Crede had his fifth career grand slam.

Minor league round-up:
  • Toledo 11, Charlotte 4
    • Josh Fields went 1-for-4 with a walk, strikeout and RBI.
    • DeWayne Wise had a pair of doubles, while Brad Eldred drove in two.
    • Rob Bell was shelled for seven runs in four innings
    • Adam Russell was the only Knights pitched unscored upon, striking out two in a perfect inning.
  • Birmingham 2, Tennessee 1
    • Brian Omogrosso pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out six.
    • Jon Link closed it out with a perfect ninth, striking out two.
    • Victor Mercedes had half the Barons' hits and the only RBI, as Birmingham benefited from three errors.
  • Asheville 4, Kannapolis 1
    • Johnnie Lowe pitched five decent innings (three hits, two runs), but didn't receive much support.
    • Following a dynamite debut, Hector Santiago struggled, giving up three hits and walking three over an inning of work.
    • Logan Johnson and Jim Gallagher had two hits apiece; Jose Martinez drew three walks.

I was not too keen on Swisher at leadoff before the season started....I'm getting sold on it now.

Was at the opener and Swish is a much needed adrenaline shot to this team. He has that infectious energy that just permeates the team and the fans.

Dye's piece of stick handling in the 7th was a beaut and the overtures to Crede's slam were the best I felt at the park since Oct '05.

I'm not a huge buyer into chemistry as a gigantic difference-maker, but it'll be interesting to see what happens to this team when they stop hitting for a bit. Last year, they didn't have anybody who wanted to take the spotlight when things were awful, so maybe that's where the "good in the clubhouse" stuff will actually come in handy.

Thanks, Wiz. It's not exactly pretty, but it's an attempt at addressing the way I see people navigating through the site, and it should help with things like search engines.

Now that the light has clicked for Ozzie on the leadoff position, maybe next year he'll start experimenting with the "handle the bat" position. How fierce would this offense look right now if Swisher & Quentin were battting 1 & 2?

I think Ozzie's development is a great story this year. How many times has he sac bunted or hit & run or attempted a steal? He's not doing anything to get in the way of this offense.

i wasn't keen on swish at the top only because he's on my fantasy team and i need rbi's from him ;-) but this was a great move in reality for the sox.

i'm not sure i would move CQ into the 2-spot just yet. perhaps after he shows consistent production in the next month or two.

I was thinking more about next year for Swisher/Quentin 1/2. OCab would have to put up Erstad numbers through June before Ozzie moved him anywhere.

I don't know, I'm kinda digging Quentin in the second cleanup spot right now. I'd probably slide him ahead of Pierzynski after AJ inevitably cools off, because he's had a history of hitting righties a little better than lefties.

I think No. 2 will come down to what happens with the middle infield. Alexei might have something to say about it if he's able to shape his game.

Why does the #8 slot get a cool name like "second cleanup"? Where's the love for #s 6 & 7? Even lousy #9, the second leadoff, gets a nickname.

I was actually thinking the 6th spot in terms of "second cleanup," because Thome's good at starting things off with a walk.
