Jermaine Dye and the answer to life, universe, everything

From Scott Reifert's blog:

Jermaine Dye wants to wear uniform No. 42 next Sunday (April 15th) to honor the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Other uniformed personnel have until the end of today to let us know if they also want to wear number 42 for the day.

Considering Jermaine is the only African-American on the 25-man roster, I think it'd be the upset of the century if he didn't win the rights.  Though it'd be great if A.J. Pierzynski mounted a fierce eleventh-hour campaign to try to grab No. 42 for himself, because he needs more people to dislike him.

UPDATE:  It's official, and Jermaine's got a nice quote:

Dye is the only African-American player on the Sox but says "everybody else has an option to [wear No. 42]. Everybody should have a chance to honor him."

Juan Uribe gave me another idea for a shirt after his first homer of the season today.  I ordered one for myself to see if I should continue using that company.  I'll let you know my findings.

Minor-league roundup:
  • Pawtucket 4, Charlotte 3
    • Lance Broadway struggled with his control uncharacteristically, walking four in five innings.  He allowed three runs, though one was unearned thanks to a double-error by Andy Gonzalez.
    • Josh Fields went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts; he's 0-for-11 to start the season.
    • Jerry Owens scored all three of the Knights' runs.
    • Boone Logan was the hard-luck loser, giving up the game-winning run in his third inning of work.  He gave up three hits, two walks and struck out five.
  • Birmingham 10, Carolina 0
    • Think Gio Gonzalez's outing yesterday was special?  Get a load of Jack Egbert's 2007 debut:  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 12 K, and half of those dozen strikeouts were of the backwards-K variety.  He's somewhat of a dark horse prospect, ranking 16th on Baseball America's list of Sox prospects, even though he posted an ERA of 2.92 over 161 2/3 innings last year.
    • Chris Gets hit a two-run triple during a seven-run eighth, though all but two of those runs were unearned.
  • Kannapolis 4, Columbus 1
    • Chris Carter collected his first hit of the season; he's now 1-for-11.
    • Anderson Gomes had a multi-hit game.  He's 4-for-11 to start what's a crucial year in terms of his development.
    • Jose Zazueta pitched five scorless innings.
  • Winston-Salem vs. Kinston -- PPD
