Never mind the present; let's talk future
There really isn't that much to say about this series. Plainly put, the Sox could only mount an offensive threat when the Yankees' defense allowed it. But hey, at least
Josh Fields will get regular playing time for the next month or so, giving Sox fans something to watch in the process.
This being the case, I'd like to go back a few days to mention
this trade proposal I missed, because the events of the past three days have rendered it exponentially more ludicrous:
Given the growing desperation of the two teams, is it out of the question Sox general manager Ken Williams would package Joe Crede and Mark Buehrle to the Yankees for Rodriguez, outfielder Melky Cabrera and
a live arm or two?
I'm not sure what's funniest about it.
- Considering Crede's current predicament, I'm pretty sure the Yankees wouldn't even pay for his plane ticket.
- The "...or two." That takes balls.
- I don't think this would've been posted on SoxTalk or WSI.

The Sox have the 25th pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and while I can't tell you about anybody who would drop that low, I can tell you what other people are saying:
- John Sickels: Matt LaPorta, 1B, Florida
- Jonathan Mayo: Chris Withrow, RHP, Midland Christian HS (Tex.)
- Jeff Passan: Corey Brown, OF, Oklahoma State
- RealGM: Michael Burgess, OF, Hillsborough HS (Fla.)
- Phil Rogers: Casey Weathers, RHP, Vanderbilt
I've already
stated my desire for a legitimate middle infielder prospect, but if nothing's available there, it'd be nice to have an outfielder with more than one above-average tool. Ryan Sweeney, Brian Anderson, Aaron Cunningham, etc., are all cut from the same cloth -- decent average, middling power, OK speed. It'd be funny if all this front-office turnover resulted in the same exact kind of player being picked once again.

Minor league round-up:- Charlotte 11, Louisville 3
- Playing the first game of his rehab assignment, Scott Podsednik went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a strikeout. He did not attempt a steal, and he was replaced late in the game by Casey Rogowski.
- Craig Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI; Ryan Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI; Brian Anderson went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI
- Lance Broadway gave up two earned runs over seven innings for the win; Mike MacDougal gave up a hit and a walk in an scoreless inning.
- Tennessee 4, Birmingham 3
- Three errors led to three unearned runs for Birmingham. Wes Whisler allowed only one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, and Edwardo Sierra was the hard-luck loser by allowing an unearned run in two innings of relief. He gave up one hit and struck out four.
- Ricardo Nanita and Jeremy Frost hit solo homers; Thomas Collaro went 2-for-4.
- Winston-Salem 4, Frederick 3
- Derek Rodriguez earned the win with six strong innings -- he allowed three runs, but none were earned. Israel Chirino and John Lujan combined for three scoreless innings in relief.
- David Cook hit a two-run homer; Javier Castillo went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Aaron Cunningham went 0-for-2 with a walk; he stole his 16th base, and was caught stealing for the eighth time.
