The White Sox confirmed that they have looked into
setting up a new Spring Training site in Glendale, Ariz., outside of Phoenix, by sharing a new facility with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This move makes plenty of sense for the Sox, who have said before that they're tired of playing the same two teams -- the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies -- over and over again, since there are only three teams in Tucson. They have no long-standing ties to Tucson, where they've only played since 1998 after spending nearly 30 years in Sarasota, Fla.
It makes less sense for the Dodgers, who have trained in Vero Beach, Fla., since their days in Brooklyn. Dodgertown is pretty much an institution, though I'm guessing since the High A-ball team there switched affiliates from Dodgers to Devil Rays, that these moves are related.
I believe the Sox organization when it says it's not looking to improve the facility itself -- Tucson Electric Park is first-class from a fan's perspective. And its quesadillas are tremendous.
